Hatchets and the forest Kapak dan hutan

Planned · Tools I–II

Four hatchets, three woods that need them, a forge to buy iron from, and a parang for the bamboo and rattan.

The hatchets

HatchetWoodworkTierGivesCutsHow to get it

Boatwright's axe Beliung254+24% chance, 1 tick fastertrees, Meranti, CengalPak Mat's own. He hands it on once you build a cengal boat with him (a later quest).

Each step up is about one tier of tree: the iron hatchet is the upgrade you buy the day you reach Kuala Besut, the steel one is what meranti is for, and the beliung is a reward, not a purchase.

Hard wood

Ordinary jungle trees take any hatchet. Meranti and cengal have a hardness, and a hatchet below it just bounces off, whatever your level. This is the one place a tool is a gate rather than a speed-up, and it is what gives the forge its reason to exist.

Ordinary trees keep their live numbers; only the hatchet is new.

Tree
Jungle on Perhentian, and the forest south of Kuala Besut. A thick jungle hardwood. Good timber.
Meranti tree
The forest south of Kuala Besut, about one tree in five. Tall and straight, with red heartwood. The old houses on the river are built of it.
Cengal tree
Deep in the Besut forest, a few at most. Cengal. Hard enough to turn a cheap blade, and it lasts a hundred years in salt water.

Chances

The chance of each attempt, by level and hatchet. A dash means you can't: too low a level for the tree or the hatchet, or the hatchet is too soft.

XP an hour

Pure cutting time with Pak Mat's lesson: no walking between trees, no full pack. Real play is slower; the point is the shape.

On ordinary trees the old hatchet and the steel one meet at the 92% cap by level 20. The steel hatchet earns its keep on meranti and cengal, which is where it is meant to be used.

The forge

Planned · Tools II Pak Leh, a blacksmith, sets up on the Kuala Besut main road by the river bridge. The forge is a shop with one service: he has the iron, you bring the wood.

A meranti handle is made at the boatyard from 2 meranti timber, Woodwork 12. So the steel hatchet asks for an iron hatchet, meranti cut with it, and a trip back to the island.

The parang, bamboo and rattan

Planned · Tools II The parang is the Malay working blade: it clears what a hatchet is too clumsy for. It opens two new things to cut, and it is a weapon (+2 max hit, Attack 5), better than the staff. Wield it and it still counts as your tool.

Bamboo is for prawn traps and the bamboo bow. Rattan has no recipe yet, on purpose: it is for the rattan creel, a basket that holds ten fish in one slot, if that idea gets built (see the ideas on the tools page).

Placing the new trees

Perhentian is still seeded exactly as in v7, and new things are added after the seeded layout, the way the archery range was. So: no new random draws in the island's seeded loop. In Kuala Besut, after the forest is placed, about one tree in five south of the main road becomes a meranti, the three trees furthest south become cengal, and bamboo clumps go on the grass beside the river. A handful of bamboo goes at the low edge of the Perhentian jungle so the island can make traps too.
